PENSACOLA, Fla (WPMI) — NBC 15 News has learned the shooter took advantage of an obscure loophole in federal gun laws to legally purchase the handgun used in Friday’s mass shooting. The FBI says Saudi pilot Mohammed Alshamrani bought the Glock 45 9mm gun used to murder three sailors at NAS Pensacola.

“He did purchase it legally and lawfully,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Rachel Rojas.

A revelation that surprised Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, a former Naval officer himself.

“I was not aware of that. I’d always thought that foreign nationals except for certain law enforcement just were not allowed to purchase firearms,” said DeSantis.
