Several female friends have recently expressed an interest in purchasing a handgun, either for concealed carry or home. My younger friends intend to make this a priority once they turn 21 and have enough money. My older friends typically just want something for home protection.

Regardless of age or reason, increasingly more women are considering purchasing a handgun or other type of firearm. However, many find the process intimidating. The nuances of the male dominated gun world can be difficult to navigate without the help of a male friend or family member. Lacking guidance, many women simply don’t act on their desire to buy a firearm.

The following are a few tips for women to consider when purchasing a firearm. Men should also keep these suggestions in mind as they help their wives, daughters, or sisters pick out a gun.

The greatest interest seems to be in handguns, so we’ll start there. There are two basic handgun types – revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Both have pros and cons.

Revolvers feature a cylinder containing five or six rounds. Pulling the trigger fires the first round and rotates the cylinder to ready the next round.

A revolver’s main downside, especially a double-action revolver, is heavy trigger pull, meaning it takes a lot of finger strength to squeeze the trigger. A single-action revolver can alleviate this problem, but it has a hammer which must be pulled back before firing.
