All too many of the other great tragedies of history - Stalin's atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few - were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. NRA endorses Arizona Gov. Ducey’s plan to prevent school shootings; bill passes committee

Republicans and the NRA endorsing and supporting “Red Flag Laws” out themselves as a danger to the Second Amendment.

The National Rifle Association, the country’s most powerful gun-rights lobbying organization, has endorsed Gov. Doug Ducey’s plan to prevent mass shootings in schools.

Republican lawmakers in the Arizona Senate announced the NRA’s support Thursday during a committee hearing, where Ducey’s proposal cleared a crucial first vote.

Sen. Steve Smith, R-Maricopa, said legislation outlining the governor’s plan, Senate Bill 1519, respects Second Amendment rights whiletaking steps to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

“Arizona is listed by many as the No. 1 Second Amendment state in the country. I want to keep it that way,” Smith, who’s sponsoring the bill, said at the outset of Thursday’s hearing.

“However, there are sensible things we can do, that we’re not doing today, to just protect the people and protect our schools.”
