O Canada.

“Firearm licence holders literally have a daily police background check, not only for crime, but for any contact with police. This does not apply to parolees, pedophiles, gang members or other segments of the criminal world.”

I am writing on behalf of the Eastern Ontario Shooting Club in response to your June 9 news story, “Ottawa councillor says he’ll ask for support in joining calls for handgun ban.”

We are a private member shooting range in the Ottawa area and boast around 1,500 members who lawfully own, use and transport firearms of all types on a daily basis. A large majority of that use is handguns. In our opinion, the recent announcement of intent to call for a handgun ban within Ottawa is disingenuous, political posturing.

The RCMP, through the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP), controls the testing, vetting and licensing of ALL lawful firearms owners in Canada. This process is arduous, and continuous throughout the term of the licence and any renewals.
