For a common-sense explanation of the need for America’s 2nd Amendment, look no further than an icon of the First Amendment — Howard Stern.
On June 12, 2016, Islamic terrorist Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 58 in a violent attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Discussing the resulting political debate, Stern provided a great metaphor for understanding guns and their proper place in the arena of personal safety and security:
“I can’t believe these people come out afterwards, and their answer to Orlando is to take guns away from people…The military…they look at the public as sheep. And think about it — we are sheep…Most of us sit around all day, we don’t know how to defend ourselves. We are in a flock, and we basically think everything’s okay.”
Stern characterizes the bad guys as wolves, and the police as sheep dogs:
“Except the wolves — the bad guys — whether they be ISIS, terrorists, homegrown or otherwise…the common thug, whatever…they’re wolves…The military and police look at themselves as sheep dogs…They’re protecting us.”
The shock jock then describes the crimes being committed by the wolves against the sheep, and the opportunity for the sheep to protect themselves:
“Let’s use us as the analogy — we’re sheep…Every night, the wolves pick off a couple of [us]. What if I went up to the sheep and I said, ‘You wanna have a shot at the wolves? I’m going to give you a pistol. You could shoot [the wolves] and save your family.'”
Howard then asks a good question — would any sheep be for disarming the herd?:
“Would any sheep say, ‘[The wolves] only hurt the family down the street…The sheep dogs are out there — they’ll protect us.'”
No. As the saying goes, “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.”
In Stern’s analogy, the sheep dogs wouldn’t understand why the sheep would choose to be vulnerable:
“But we have a sheep dog for every citizen, and the wolves are still eating you.”
Indeed. As Howard indicates, France was a gun-free zone, which is to say, the sheep were unarmed.
“In France, they have the tightest gun control laws on the planet. The terrorists all had AR-15s…every kind of pistol…”
Stern goes on to name the most gun-free zone on the planet, where murder still thrived: an airplane. On September 11, 2001, highjackers with box-cutters led to the loss of thousands of American lives.
Guns aren’t the problem; evil is. And taking away liberty — therefore, insanely leaving the innocent citizenry more vulnerable to attack — is, too.
