In 1992 the Los Angeles riots broke out after four police officers who beat Rodney King to a pulp were acquitted.
People began rioting. The supposedly liberal celebrities and actors demanded the police protect them, and so the police withdrew to these affluent neighbourhoods to protect the rich and the famous.
This left Koreatown in particular at the mercy of the rampaging hordes. It wasn’t that Koreans had done anything in particular to king. They were just honest and hard working people whose livelihoods were now at risk.
