I oppose the “fix NICS” bill for several reasons.
First of all, it’s a “do nothing” bill, which in itself wouldn’t change federal law. However, with the blessing of the nra, and a couple of other “pro gun” organizations, it is likely to pass with little opposition. The problem is with amendments. Anything could be added, any anti gunners deepest desires, and without real opposition, could become law. Just remember, how the Hugh’s amendment was snuck into to the 1986 fopa.
Secondly, the bill would fine federal agencies who fail to give info on prohibited persons to NICS. How exactly does taking money from one agency and giving it to another “force” compliance? If we really wanted to see results, why not go after the individual agents who fail to upload the info (whether they get fired/fined/etc)?
But the biggest reason I oppose “fixing” NICS is because I oppose NICS in the first place. It needs to be scrapped, along with all the bureaucrats who have control over it and our rights. It’s nothing but a back door gun ban. Remember when the Social Security Administration and VA added people who didn’t do their own finances to the NICS database as “prohibited persons”(and yes, the ssa’s rule was eventually overturned by congress and Trump, I’m not sure if the VA is still running that scheme). What makes anyone think they won’t try to get others added on some other scheme to deny rights with out due process? A better system (since we can’t seem to get rid of the GCA68 cancer), would be a “blind identification” where instead of sending the personal info of a gun buyer to the FBI to get cleared, a database of prohibited persons gets given to ffl’s and the seller can check the buyer’s ID against the list. Instant approval or denial. No delays because the system is swamped, or denial because some bureaucrat is having a bad day.
