All too many of the other great tragedies of history - Stalin's atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few - were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. Many could well have been avoided mitigated, had the perpetrators known their intended victims were equipped with a rifle and twenty bullets apiece... If a few hundred Jewish fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto could hold off the Wehrmacht for almost a month with only a handful weapons, six million Jews armed with rifles could not so easily have been herded into cattle cars.

Shall not be infringed actually means shall not be infringed. The intention was that we the people could never be oppressed by force of arms by our national government, because it would not be better armed than the citizenry would be. Does that sound radical? It shouldn’t. That was how our republic was founded.

What about today’s more lethal weapons? Again, “shall not be infringed” was the intention. Our problem really isn’t the weapons. It is the catastrophic societal loss of moral character. No gun-banning laws will change that or stop people intent on doing mayhem from doing it. But law-abiding citizens still have the right to defend themselves. That right is recognized as unalienable and protected against infringement in our system of government.
