New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand appears to have acquired much of her firearms knowledge from Hollywood movies.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Gillibrand suggested that guns with “silencers” (also known as “suppressors”) are “quiet” when fired, making it difficult to hear if someone is shot:
When someone gets shot by a gun with a silencer, it's quiet. Witnesses might not hear. Police will be less likely to track down the shooter.

No Senator Gillibrand, a gun with a silencer is not “quiet” by any stretch of the imagination. You’d know that if you’d ever used one, or seen one in action on a firing range.
While the suppressor will indeed reduce the decibel level of a firearm to a level that will not blow out the ear drums of the person pulling the trigger, a gunshot from a firearm with a suppressor is still going to wake the neighbors.
A silenced 9mm pistol, for example, clocks in at around 125 decibels. That’s louder than thunder and the sirens on an emergency vehicle.
Does Senator Gillibrand think thunder and the sirens on an emergency vehicle are quiet?
A silenced rifle firing a .223 round clocks in at around 135 decibels. That’s louder than a jackhammer.
