The Port Arthur massacre occurred on April 28–29, 1996, in Tasmania, Australia. A gunman killed 35 people and injured 23 others at the historic Port Arthur tourist site, making it the deadliest mass shooting in Australian history. The attack prompted nationwide gun law reforms, including the National Firearms Agreement.
Following the introduction of strict gun laws, Australian gun owners were allowed to hand in their illegal weapons to authorities without facing a penalty. Compensation was offered, and surrendered guns were destroyed. 5/10/1997.
