CHEYENNE – Many of Wyoming’s gun-free zones will be repealed July 1.
The change comes after public testimony in opposition to the repeal vastly outnumbered that of those supportive of the measure. The push against the measure included a die-in organized by University of Wyoming students in the Capitol Rotunda earlier this week. Students hummed “Amazing Grace” and laid on the floor outside Gov. Mark Gordon’s office.
Gordon penned a letter highly critical of the Wyoming Legislature for its passage of House Bill 172 to accompany his notification the bill would become law without his signature.
“Gun free zones are not repealed — they are now determined exclusively by the legislature,” Gordon wrote.
House Bill 172, “Repeal gun free zones and preemption amendments,” will allow concealed carry in any schools, government buildings and meetings, as well as college and university sporting events that do not serve alcohol.
