San Antonio, Texas – The first day that campus carry was officially implemented in Texas, geography professor Charles Smith showed up to class wearing body armor and a helmet.
The campus carry law was signed into law in 2015, but wasn’t officially implemented into community colleges until Tuesday. With the law taking effect, people who have concealed carry permits can legally carry their guns on college campuses.
“I was just saying I don’t feel safe,” Smith told mySA.com. “It definitely makes me feel uneasy that there are more firearms on campus than there really should be. (Dressing this way) was just a statement on how I felt.”
“I realize students were carrying guns on campus illegally, but now it’s legal to do so. It increases the chances of something happening,” Smith said. “Used to, when they got mad at me, they had to go home to get the gun and had time to cool off, now they will have it with them.”
“My assumption is that you will have more people carrying guns, that will lead to problems. It always has,” Smith said. “There is nothing on this planet worth a human life.”
Smith isn’t alone. The anti-campus carry group, Cocks Not Glocks, made headlines last year by waving around dildos to protest campus carry. The group is now working with an advertising agency to promote ballistic vests with school branding.
